Best of BirdTalk

We have been lucky to meet many wonderful people in the bird world in person or over the phone on BirdTalk. Here are some interviews from the past in which our listeners might be interested. We have edited them down to the interviews without the old commercials. Please excuse the choppy breaks and unusual volume levels. The microphone and telephone volumes were out of our control during the BirdTalk broadcasts. We will be adding more for your listening pleasure so check back in here on occasion.

On January 12, 2019 the BirdTalk Guys interviewed Mark Obmascik, the author of "The Big Year",  the award winning book about three birders on a quest to count the most bird species in North America. This is the book about the REAL Big Year on which the movie was based. He had some great stories and told us about his new book "The Storm on Our Shores" and his CBS "60 Minutes" story.

Mark Obmascik is also the author of "Halfway to Heaven" about his attempt to climb all fifty-four 14,000 foot Colorado peaks in one year.

It was the summer of 1999 and the Denver and Arvada Wild Birds Unlimited stores were sponsoring the Rocky Mountain PBS series “The Life of Birds” hosted by David Attenborough. At that time BirdTalk was broadcasting on another Denver-area radio station. We took a chance and called Attenborough’s publicist. To our pleasant surprise we booked an interview with Sir David Attenborough on July 17, 1999. I found the 19 year old cassette tape of the program, edited out commercials and irrelevancies. We are happy to present the interview for you here. Please ignore any reference to the series air dates unless your TV can go back in time to view 1999 television programs. “The Life of Birds” DVD set and book is available on Amazon. It is also available on Amazon Prime for $8.99 for all 10 episodes!

In September 2015 we interviewed Dr. John Marzluff, author of “Welcome to Subirdia: Sharing Our Neighborhoods with Wrens, Robins, Woodpeckers, and other Wildlife” about how wild birds benefit from living in our suburbs and cities. We like it when he says a good way to help birds is to provide feeders.

It was November of 2000 and a new field guide had just been published. “The Sibley Guide to Birds” ended up on the New York Times bestseller list. We interviewed David Sibley, author of “The Sibley Guide to Birds” about birds and his wonderful field guide. Since then Sibley has written and/or illustrated many field guides, even one on trees.

On September 8, 2001 the BirdTalk Guys had the privilege of interviewing author and naturalist Scott Weidensaul about two of his books, Living on the Wind and The Ghost with Trembling Wings. The interview covered much fascinating information about migration.

From 03/29/17

Scott and David Menough were interviewed on the radio show Kelley & Kafer on 710KNUS.
